Environmental Review

Litter & Waste Management

On assessing our litter and waste management we recognised that there was not a great emphasis on recycling.

We assessed how waste was discarded in the school and realised that almost 2 industrial sized bins were going to landfill each week. (Sixteen black bags per week)

There was no designated paper recycling bins in classrooms.

Composting was at a minimum. It was collected some days & not others.

We took a walk around the school grounds and the children highlighted several litter blackspots.

This is their findings....

- Who was involved in the review: The Green Schools Committee together with the staff of Ballyheane N.S.

Results Obtained:

Almost 2 industrial sized bins were going to landfill each week. (sixteen black bags per week)

There were no other opportunities for recycling in the school.

On the school grounds there were several litter blackspots. Some were noticeably worse after the weekend while we can make every effort to control the litter problem on our school grounds we cannot control outside parties dumping rubbish.

Conclusion: We had a lot of work to do but we set out our strategies to improve the situation.
